Martin Heinrich Profiled In The Guardian

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:08:27 PM PDT

Yes, The Guardian, the British newspaper.
Here in New Mexico we're kind of used to being overlooked.  On national weathermaps the closes cities indicated are always Phoenix and Denver.  Think back to the old Bugs Bunny cartoons:  Albuquerque is usually a catchphrase meaning "the middle of nowhere."

John McCain Speech: He's Using OUR Frames!

Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 07:20:51 AM PDT

This is going to be a brief diary,as I'm a little busy right now, but I'm listening to the Stephanie Miller Show while I work and noticed something that I wanted to share.
Over the past few years Democrats have repeated fallen for Republican framing of issues.  on every issue from Social Security to the war, Dems have repeatedly, stupidly repeated Republican frames, allowing Republicans to rhetorically set the agenda and undermine dialog.

But now, listening to a radio montage I heard McCain repeat the word "change" again and again.  It made me realize that we,as Democrats have at long last framed the agenda for this election.  Barack Obama has changed the discourse in this country, and the message of this election is his message.  We've taken the reins back!

Don Siegelman Was Live on MSNBC

Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 06:17:46 PM PDT

On Dan Abrams show, Verdict.  I'm surprised there isn't anything on the diaries list yet.

I'm pleased to see Dan Abrams doing this.  His "fair broker" schtick gets on my nerves, as it usually seems to be an excuse to pass along received wisdom and promote conventional thought in the name of playing the devil's advocate.  He's also having Phil Donohue as a guest later on.  Giving a place for these two men to voice their concern and educate the public of the outrages they've undergone is a big step in the right direction for Abrams.

Right now, I'm not on a good computer for doing video links, so I'm hoping that someone else will provide a link to this in the comments. Sorry this is short, but i wanted to put this out in case people want to watch it.

Bar-b-q for truth: What Obama needs to eat in PA

Sat Mar 08, 2008 at 08:09:12 AM PDT

I'd like to preface this by saying that I am a vegetarian and have been one for over a decade.  I think of all the meats you can eat, pork is the worst.  It creates so much pollution in its factory farmed manifestations that while I don't think it's my place to call for its banning, if I were Queen for a Day, reform of pork farming practices would be one of my biggest priorities.

That being said, I think that while campaigning in Pennsylvania, I think Barack Obama should hit every bar-b-q stand within the state line, and order every pork item on the menu.

A quick note on Tim Russert's imagination

Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 07:48:45 AM PDT

I watched the debate last night and was struck by a mental image I'd like to share with you all.

I acknowledge in advance that this is not going be a great diary.  It's gonna be short, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Did anyone here in NM get to hear Palast on KUNM?

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 09:32:49 AM PDT

Greg Palast was on the KUNM call-in show this morning, and I got to listen to about half of it before I had to leave the car.  He is here investigating the funky primary results (I hereby request that it be referred to as the 'funky' primary, mostly because I like to say 'funky.')

Palast had some pretty disturbing things to say before I had to leave about the proportion of provisional ballots in upstate counties, and about the disappearance of names from the voter rolls.

Senator Clinton, You're No LBJ.

Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 10:18:33 AM PDT

No, I never met Lyndon Baines Johnson (though I have seen the animatronic LBJ at the University of Texas).  Neither am I an expert on his administration.  I have, though, over the course of my life gather some impressions about the man, and I have to say, whether or not you meant to diss Dr. King with your remarks about his needing LBJ to make his Dream come true, your efforts to cast yourself as the standard bearer of Johnson-esque pragmatism goes waaay wide of the mark.

Dear Governor Richardson, Please drop out.

Wed Jan 09, 2008 at 08:23:08 AM PDT

Hello Governor Richardson.  I am a resident of your state and I am proud to be a New Mexico Democrat.  I'm proud of a lot of the work you have done for us.  The Rail Runner, for example, is an idea that's been a long time coming, and I'm excited to see it progress towards Santa Fe.  A real commuter line is something we've needed for years to lighten car traffic and move tourists.  I'm also a fan of your foreign policy work (although you have to admit you really bit the big one on the Wen Ho Lee case).  I've been tantalized as you have hinted at bringing universal health care to New Mexico, as I have health issues and not having to worry about getting care would be a big relief to me, both emotionally and financially.

I miss Molly Ivins

Fri Dec 28, 2007 at 10:28:53 AM PDT

In this time of enmity before the primaries, I've been searching without avail for guidance.  I've been looking for unapologetic good sense and the kind of humor that comes from years of stubbornly defending oneself from jackasses.  I want someone to puncture the windbags and make me chuckle at my own willingness to get involved in pointless arguments with fools.

I miss Molly Ivins like you wouldn't even believe.

My Italian surprise

Mon Sep 24, 2007 at 09:46:25 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I just got back from Italy and am incredibly jetlagged.  I am not posting to boast about my vacation but wanted to share some political impressions from my time overseas.
My stay in Italy was about a week, driving around Tuscany in a rental car.  We were based out of rented house in a tiny hilltop community called Vellano, near Pescia.  We went as far south as Chiusi, but mostly stayed closer, making day trips to Pisa, Lucca,Florence, and Siena.
I, as an American, am inclined to think of rural communities and small towns as conservative.  As a lapsed Catholic, I, in the past, have imagined that Italy was Ratzinger country, all aboard for the kneejerk destruction of Vatican II.  But what I found in Italy was actually very different.

I have a question about Fox News

Mon Apr 02, 2007 at 08:39:40 AM PDT

What would happen if Fox news came out as the propaganda arm of the Republican party?  It's something that's been kind of itching in the back of my brain ever since the controversy arose regarding the Nevada and CBC debates.  What would be the ramifications for the Republican party, money wise?  How about for their advertisers?

Curveball on the news last night

Wed Mar 14, 2007 at 08:01:24 AM PDT

I was only really half listening to the ABC news last night, as I was cooking dinner at the same time.  I was waiting for it to be time for Olbermann, and so left it on whatever channel it had landed on the night before.  I was expecting the news to be the usual, water-skiing squirrels, Anna Nicole still dead, etc.  Contrary to my expectations the news did a piece onthe fact that the main source the lies upon which this war is based, an Iraqi 'scientist,' codename 'Curveball.'  And to my further my surprise the news reported what every kos reader has known since the war began: that Curveball was lying and the people who were using his testimony about the non-existant Iraqi nuclear program were repeatedly and in no certain terms advised that he was lying.  At the time I just thought "Well, I knew that BEFORE the war started,"  and went back to preparing the roux for creamed spinach.
But then I couldn't stop thinking about the report.

Beautiful Protest at Reed College

Tue Mar 13, 2007 at 10:57:30 AM PDT

Please go look at this flickr photoset.
It is taken by a flickr member who goes under the name of "enemy combatant." It is posted at BoingBoing, and when I saw the first image there it brought a tear to my eye.
I'm a Reed alumna, and say cheers to the students and/or faculty who put that together, as well as the photographer.
Sorry for the shortness of this diary, I just wanted to help disseminate these images.

An Open Letter To Mr. Limbaugh

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 11:01:30 PM PDT

Dear Mr. Limbaugh,
I remember your broadcast on the night of the midterm election, 1994.  I'd voted for the first time two years before, and voted for Bill Clinton.  In the two intervening years I must admit I didn't pay much attention to politics.  I was in college, and so was otherwise occupied, and so the congressional "revolution" came to me as a nasty shock.

I remember watching your show that night.  I just didn't get how so many Americans could be so dumb.  You were supposed to be Mr. Zeitgeist, right?  So I watched your damn show.

Remember what you said?

It ain't over yet in NM-01

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 01:25:38 PM PDT

This is going to be short and sweet. Yesterday I was a Dem poll watcher and saw first hand how the scanners that came with our new all paper ballot system should have bundled with an extra large bottle of Excedrin. Ballots that were rejected by the scanners were inserted into a slot in the ballot box, leading to a small holding compartment so that they could be held separately for a later hand count. According to the Abq Journal,4,850 such ballots remain uncounted, and Wilson's lead has dwindled to 1,048 . This is close, but possible. Do we dare to hope? You better be-damn-lieve it. Thanks to m-pyre for posting this to their site, as I canceled my subscription to the journal over a year ago.

What am I gonna do without Kos?

Sun Nov 05, 2006 at 05:46:52 PM PDT

I signed up to poll watch for Patricia Madrid.  We are strongly encouraged as poll watchers to stay the whole day at our polling site, starting at 7:00 am and ending whenever the voters have finished and everything is completed.  It just occurred to me that for the first time in years, on a day of reckoning, I'm going to be completely cut off from the news and especially from the internet.

What happened at the Laura Bush rally yesterday? NM-01

Sat Nov 04, 2006 at 07:33:39 AM PDT

So yesterday afternoon, Laura Bush came to Albuquerque for a rally supporting Heather Wilson.  My brother-in-law's office is accross the street from the rally site.  His mail was delivered early by a flustered postal worker determined to finish the neighborhood before an expected influx of traffic.  My brother-in-law got nervous when he heard this.  He had an important client coming in a t 2:30, and bad traffic would get in the way.
But then something funny happened.  The traffic didn't arrive.
